Spanish transition to democracy
The Spanish transition to democracy was the historical process through which Spain shifted from the Francoist dictatorship to a constitutional parliamentary monarchy under King Juan Carlos I. Beginning after the death of Francisco Franco in November 1975, the period was characterized by institutional reform, broad negotiation between reformist elites and the democratic opposition, the approval of the Political Reform Act of 1976, the first free elections in 1977, and the 1978 Constitution. It concluded with the 1982 general election and the peaceful transfer of power to the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party.
